About Nitro

Collaborating with leading and emerging black artists and performers, Nitro creates dynamic music theatre events that explore the contemporary black British experience. The company takes a visceral approach to story-telling, creating accessible and popular theatre that combines new writing, original music, drama and dance. From musicals to oratorios, from dance shows to opera, Nitro’s productions celebrate black music, inspired and driven by a wealth of styles from reggae, calypso, salsa, soul, jazz and hip-hop to contemporary opera.

Since its formation in 1979, the company (originally set up as the Black Theatre Co-operative) has created over 50 shows, developing opportunities for black artists in the UK and working with some of the most talented performers, composers and writers of the past three decades.

Exploring epic and explosive themes such as migration, cultural values, belonging and salvation, Nitro’s unique blend of music theatre brings spectacle and intimacy to the art of story-telling. Drawing upon rich and often untold histories, Nitro’s productions promise an enlightening and entertaining theatrical experience that engage a wide range of audiences.
